The community group offers an opportunity to do new things that benefit us. Here are some of the ongoing projects and requests by the community. Get in touch with the group if any of these projects interest you.
Activities
There’s potential to gain funding for any activities Gallatown feels it will benefit from. Here are some ideas (some are ongoing) that have the potential to tackle isolation for individuals and offer low cost activities for families…
- Community Garden and Wild-Play Space (range of activities)
- Woodwork (Indoors and outdoors)
- Outdoor cooking (Learn how to use a Kelly-Kettle)
- Airfix model building (Learn to build and paint airfix kits)
- Family nights (bingo, parties, boardgames)
- Learn to build planters and benches for your own garden
- Street Planters (add colour with large wooden planters)
Gardening Is Available
Gardening is a key activity during our Wednesday Wellbeing sessions. Our gardening area is known as the “Wild Space” because it supports family activities and outdoor play. The land is owned by Kirkcaldy YMCA but is loaned to the community group within our partnership. Hundreds of people have used the Wild space in recent years, making it a great option to support the community while also working on our own wellbeing.
Current Gardening Project
As part of our ongoing effort to support local wildlife, we would like to build a raised bed in the wild space. The ground is in the middle of the pump track so the theme is tyres. The project will involve using 16″ tyres stacked two high and bolted together to make a curvy-shaped raised bed. I’m keen to have a row of tyres through the middle with planks to form a bridge – this will offer a sensory experience as users pass the plants growing on either side. We will half fill the bed with bark (thanks to Arb-Tech Tree Surgery who provide it free) and ideally finish with topsoil (can anyone get this for us?).
Crafts Is Available
The GCI raises funds to fund a busy craft group. The group comes together to create wonderful things every Tuesday in the newly built community hub owned by Kirkcaldy YMCA.
Current Project: Totem Poles
We have an exciting totem pole project that was sadly interrupted by the pandemic. The totem poles display a distant history of Gallatown and some of our most recent chapters. It would be a sign of community resilience to complete the totem poles and install them in the chosen location (one of the entrances to the Gallatown Hub). We need anyone with crafting skills to work on these and potentially a local groundwork business to dig the required hole (as anything below 2 feet might be problematic without the right equipment).
Contact Ryan Bayne to offer assistance.

Workshop Is Available
We’ve established a small workshop with the aim of creating an official men’s Shed – like those registered with the Scottish Men’s Shed Association. We’ve made good progress and delivered a couple of hundred hours of woodwork sessions to all age groups; during family groups, one to one confidence-building sessions, secondary School pupils during School hours and part of our Wednesday Wellbeing sessions.
